Saul Cathcart

Summer Exhibition

 7th August to  6th September

I always try to go about creating a painting in a new way. I look for fresh ways in which to apply and manipulate paint, because for me each painting is a different experience to the last. I only paint in situ, out in the landscape so I can respond to my surroundings directly. The idea of sketching something down is so pure and unpretentious. It’s an honest, naked view of a person’s thoughts on a page. If you go into a sketch not concerned with how it looks, but focused on capturing what is there, the end result hides nothing. I want to go about creating a painting in the same way as this, to produce work with the same integrity. I often start by frantically scratching and scribbling into the canvas with pencils and pastels, to create bold and interesting marks as well as observational ones. At times I’m not looking at the canvas at all, but lost in what is happening in front of me. I like the idea of being instinctive and at times unpredictable with the colours I use. I also enjoy pushing paint around with immediacy allowing a painting to evolve in its own way. I put great trust in my hand movements and use big brushes to create gestural marks that echo the movement of the sea. I’m not concerned with reproducing the exact shape of a single wave, more with the many shapes a wave creates and the feelings felt at the time. I think this is a direct response to working on site, close to the water’s edge. I don’t have time to tinker about. Waves come and go and change shape within a split second. Clouds move and the light is suddenly gone. Nature forces me to work fast.
