Richard Gibson

            Shaker Boxes

16th &17th July

1 day £75 or 2 day course £120

No Previous experience needed. Adult Course.

Richard began woodworking again about 10 yrs ago as an antidote to sitting at a computer all day and to develop interests outside his day job. Having tried several green projects he discovered shaker boxes and fell in love again with the simplicity of style and efficiency of design. The shakers used wood grown locally to them I saw this as a wonderful opportunity to make beautiful boxes from locally sourced timber - hence shaker boxes made from traditional English hardwoods. Modern living demands modern materials so I make my box bases from sustainably sourced (FSA) best quality birch ply which keeps the box stable. The tops are traditional solid wood and so will move with the seasons. I now make a series of traditional contemporary designs all based on the original shaker form.

Running over two days, the aim of the course is to enable anyone to make a set of 3 classic shaker boxes plus an everyday item such as an egg carrier or tray. Two items will be made each day and people may come for just one day if they wish. Tools and materials will be provided and, in keeping with the shaker traditions wood will be locally and sustainably sourced. The 3 box sizes are 6,7 and 8 inches long.

Steve Slimm                         Freedom to Paint

Sat 19th June, Wed 20th Aug, Thur 18th Sept

Sessions to Inspire and Excite.  Time: 10am to 4pm   Cost: £75 per day

Do you feel your painting gets a little too tight at times – and you long to loosen up? If so, then these sessions are designed for you. Whether you’ve been painting a short while or for many years, and even if you think have no skills whatsoever you are bound to find inspiration. The sessions, designed by myself, are essentially about PAINT. They will emphasize how to make paint work for you – rather than you having to work for paint, thus freeing you up to explore the paint itself - as well as the subject under consideration                                               These are just a few of the specifics we’ll be (dis)covering:

§  Why do you want freedom?

§  How do you define freedom? What does it mean to you?

§  How freedom in paint will benefit you.

§  Expanding your relationship with materials.

§  How to let go of preciousness (embracing destruction!)

§  Labour vrs Freedom.

§  Ways to start afresh.

§  Breaking ingrained patterns.

§  Establishing style.

§  Revitalising tired work

But much more than this . . . Painting is only a reflection of life. And the way you might paint is a reflection of the way you live. This is because essentially both aspects are a reflection of you as a person. In these sessions you will get to know that person better – as well as interacting with others and having a fun time.               If you already paint, you’ll need to bring your own equipment, (whatever your chosen medium. If you haven’t yet painted – then I have everything you need to start.                                                                                                                 I shall look forward to some inspiring sessions with you – and if you are really looking to find your freedom in life and in paint – then expect some dynamic changes – and fun!                                                                                     Please ring Victoria at the gallery for bookings 01208 880605/ 07773822667 or visit the Wave 7 Gallery Facebook page and message.
